NURSE WITH WOUND
Anyone with me here? I was up to my eyeballs in NWW back in the '90s and kept up the pace 'til about 2003 or so, but have slacked off in recent years for no other reason except, well, I guess there's a thousand other musical avenues worth exploring, too, and I had/have the feeling that 20-odd NWW discs was enough to keep me satisfied for at least half a lifetime. Steven Stapleton, aka Nurse With Wound, managed to keep a fairly subterranean profile for nigh on 20 years, or at least until The Wire put him on the front cover of their magazine in 1997, with a story by David Keenan, and next thing you knew the guy was the pin-up boy for esoteric music geeks the world over. The NWW "list" - the list of musical influences Stapleton displayed on the inside sleeve of their debut LP, Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An Umbrella - is so legendary amongst collector-dork circles you could Google it right now and find at least half-a-dozen web sites dedicated to its artists, Best Ofs, fake entries, omissions, etc. Fact is, I've been known to debate its merits myself (fancy that!), such as: Steven, why so Eurocentric? How on earth could you not list Sun Ra or Cecil Taylor?
I haven't purchased any NWW since '03, though I've been giving some of the old faves a spin and I've narrowed his best efforts (at least out of the albums I own) down to: 1986's Spiral Insana (the best, and probably should've been listed in my Top 100 a little while ago); 1996's Who Can I Turn To Stereo; and 1999's An Awkward Pause. The first possesses a creaking ambience which never shifts, and whilst it doesn't exactly explore many different areas of sound, the terrain it travels is note-perfect. The second is from NWW's supposed "sell-out" period from the mid '90s, when hardcore noiseniks thought Stapleton had gone soft by daring to put a goddamn tune or two on his records (the cheek!), though for my money the ethno-trance-rock shenanigans he was indulging in at the time sure beats the cut-up/tape fuckery of his more difficult works. And the latter, An Awkward Pause, is a full-blown "rock" album w/ David Tibet on vocals that sees the NWW moniker quite seriously "rocking it" like Stapleton is living his teenage dreams of having joined Guru Guru or Ash Ra Temple in a Berlin nightclub. It is pulled off with such aplomb it still has me wondering why he hasn't indulged further w/ the idea of making NWW a full-blown krautrock tribute act for a few discs more. I'd buy 'em!
Stapleton is still active playing music and creating his art on his farm in Ireland, and has even taken to playing the odd live gig the last year or two, something he didn't do for 20 years or so. There's also that hip-hop album he keeps on threatening to release... Hmmm... the guy's in his 50s now, still going strong, has a healthy back catalogue which still brings me joy, and for that I raise my glass! Anyone with me?

I agree about your picks and I'd add "Thunder Perfect Mind" in there too. The very last seconds of that rec gouged my brain but good in the 90's. Ouch.
Regarding Steven's Eurocentricity - it's true, but I'm glad he was looking that way, since we got JOE CARDUCCI to turn to about the Americans! The NWW list stood/stands as the best single introduction to aural wonders of the continental variety a young person could potential stumble across.
Mrow: I didn't figure that a NWW gig would exactly compete w/ Stinking Lizaveta in the high-energy stakes (I saw a Lizaveta CD in the racks at a local store last week and was mighty tempted...). TPM is indeed a cool album and I was going to pick it, too (and of course I listed the Current 93 album of the same name in my Top 100: that record SLAYS me!). However, I just can't figure out how a young Stapleton, ensconsed as he was in everything from Amon Duul to International Harvester to the Residents to Sonny Sharrock, somehow skipped the MASSIVE and incredibly strange and beautiful music world of Sun Ra. It simply doesn't make any sense!!
Well NWW did more than namecheck; they sampled the hell out of all those crazy records. I still find listening to actual BRAINTICKET records kind of a letdown - seeing that Steven shoved all the good parts in my face a couple years earlier. There wasn't much left unturned on the original artifact for me to discover!
And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't WHITEHOUSE on the NWW list?
The reason why Whitehouse have never appealed to anybody with a modicum of good taste is because they suck.
They are a text book example of the under-educated, lower middle-class white boy attempting to escape his limited circumstances through adopting a pose of "art". Whitehouse's schtik is composed of entirely empty gestures of "shocking" images and sounds that are as predictable and cliched as a Status Quo record.
For chrisasakes, Snoop and Pharell's "Drop It Like It's Hot" is more adventurous, surprising and sonically inventive than anything Whitehosue ever did.
Because the funny thing is, it's always the lumpen populist non-"art" oreinted producers/musicians that end up producing far more radical music than anything that comes out of the dry, "arty", self-consciously "avant-garde" camp.
Which is why I'll always take Albert Ayler over Evan Parker, King Tubby over Stockhausen, Jeff Mills over Carten Nicolai and the fuckin' Neptunes over Whitehouse.

The nww list is still a major referance point for weird music dorks - though i certainly agree with dave that failing to include the likes of Sun Ra is perplexing at best! Yes, Whitehouse are on the list - but i think they had just started as a band when the list was compiled. "New Britian" was a few years later. IMO it really holds up well today. Esp in context of all this no-input, onkyo, reductionist nonsense that was oh so popular in the radical improv crowd in recent years. Certainly sits well amongst it's referance points, being, Alvin Lucier's 'bird and person dyning' and the more extreme vocal ends of Yoko Ono.

Shocking images? mmmmm maybe you are refering to the plethora of bands that followed in the hey-day of so called 'power electronics' - many kids trying to out-shock the next, agreed about as exciting and shocking as an end of season epsiode of "Home and Away". Undereducated seems weird as I know philip best has a phd, but whatever this angle does not interest me as such. Yes, so you like dance music - dance, dance, dance. I am not sure New Britian has anything to do with this genre. the Neptunes, I heard one of their records once - sounded like pansonic with sexy men panting over the top. Which may very well be an update on the early hip hop sampling kraftwerk kinda vibe.
But to suggest the Neptunes sound has one iota of originality is pretty absurd. Public Enemy still rule in the samp of hip-hop sonic genius. Whitehouse, in my opinion, are complete and total bollocks for a whole host of reasons, regardless of any members' education. Whitehouse may be a load of self-consciously misanthropic garbage custom-made for suburban white-boy geeks to feel transgressive and "shocking", but so is Snoop Doggy-Dogg Shit. No difference between the two except one sells millions of records and the other doesn't.

As for Whitehouse, those guys did things with sound that still has me reeling to this day. Their earliest albums were/are completely harrowing. Their later albums, such as Cruise and Birdseed are my favourites in the power electronics genre. I can listen to those two any time. They never cease to surprise me at all. I don't even know how to put it into words... it is a very physical experience. I wish they were still doing it. Their last couple of albums didn't satisfy me in the same way as those two, but Whitehouse always seemed work in cycles. They seemed like they were on the cusp of their next big breakthrough.
