Maximum RocknRoll no. 85 / June 1990 I've been sick the past few days, and I remain unwell, but have recently passed the time by re-reading this 33-year-old issue of MRR and dissecting it for you. I literally grabbed a big pile of old MRR issues and pulled one out at random. The one I chose I promised to actually read and then write about. Only an ill man would take on such a task. At this stage, the publication was a monthly behemoth, growing bigger and bigger (both in readership and pages), and perhaps this is just me throwing my own personal context onto it, but it was an interesting time for punk rock, underground music and where things were about to head. One indication of this is the review of Fugazi's debut, Repeater , a token, positive one that acknowledged it as a fine album but also said that the hype around the band was so huge that a positive review in MRR might mean little in the grand scheme of things (didn't it pre-sell something insane like 100,000 copi

OKKULTOKRATI The band known as Okkultokrati were an unknown entity to me up until a few years ago. During the height of The Covid Years, in between lockdowns, a customer asked me to order their latest album for the shop. After he repeated the band name and spelt it out to me a few times, I finally got the gist of it, and my curiosity was piqued because of its peculiarity and the fact that the recording was on the Southern Lord label. During said lockdowns, I went through some strange musical phases and tangents. In 2021, I listened to a lot of contemporary death-metal of the crustacious varietal (Tomb Mold, Mortiferum, Witch Vomit, Blood Incantation, Voidceremony et al ) and electronic music (Future Sound Of London, Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, even friggin' Underworld ), the change in lifestyle and housebound activities twisting my sonic proclivities in strange ways. In Praise Of The Water Label, Part 2: FLIPPER! The Water label reissued the crucial 1982 - 1987 Flipper catalogue on compact disc in the year 2009, in tandem w/ vinyl reissues on its sister/brother label, 4 Men With Beards. For myself, this was a big deal for several reasons. Firstly, I had been a huge fan of the band since the year 1986 when I first purchased their "Sex Bomb" 7" from Greville Records (thanks, Steve) - and their essential albums, Album Generic Flipper, Gone Fishin', Public Flipper Ltd. and the singles comp', Sex Bomb Baby, throughout 1987 - their grimy punk sludge being the soundtrack to my 15 year-old brain; secondly, I was then looking after both Water and 4 Men With Beards w/ their distribution needs Down Under; and thirdly, the band was touring Australia that year for the very first time, and I licensed their two recently-released albums, Love and Fight, as a special Oz tour 2CD pack for the local market (more on that later).
